A summary of this month's contents.

TEACH-IN 2008 — PART 1 OF OUR FLAGSHIP EDUCATIONAL SERIES, STARTING IN THE NOVEMBER 2007 ISSUE!

Everyday Practical Electronics is famed for its educational contents, publishing our highly popular "Teach-In" series every two years.

Our new series for 2008 is subtitled Using PIC Microcontrollers and focuses on the PIC range of devices manufactured by Arizona Microchip, who claim to have produced over 5 billion devices over the years. As EPE readers will know, the PICmicro is our device of choice for microcontroller projects for well over 10 years and our new series builds on our extensive experience of using these devices.

Teach-In 2008 is based on our tried and trusted Toolkit TK3 software for PIC micro programming, and uses a range of breadboard projects that take you step by step through the development of PICmicro source code.

Electrocardiograph (ECG)

Your very own electrocardiograph that can display your ECG on a home computer. Using our design you can take a look at your own ECG and store samples for reference. Quite simple to build, based on a PIC16F84 microcontroller. USB computer interface. Windows software included. This article also outlines some of 'electrical' operation of the human heart for general interest.

THIS DESIGN IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR CORRECT MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS FROM A QUALIFIED PRACTITIONER. IT IS INTENDED AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL DEVICE ONLY. NOT TO BE USED IF A PACEMAKER IS FITTED.

Vehicle Multi-Voltage Monitor

An adaptable bargraph LED voltmeter that is ideal for monitoring a variety of voltage levels in a modern car. Its scale can be trimmed as appropriate - eg. 0-1V for an oxygen sensor or 0-5V for an airflow meter or 10-14V for a car battery.

The multicolour bargraph helps warns of possible malfunction. LM3914 based, +12V operation.

Experimenter's Audio System

A combination of useful modules for radio circuit experimenters. Our project comprises:

  • high gain audio pre-amplifier
  • switchable audio filters
  • power amplifier
  • DC stabilised supply

The objective is to achieve high quality and low noise, whilst using easy to source components in a low cost design. The perfect companion for radio circuitry experimenters.

Inductance and Q Factor Meter (Part 2)

This unique projects demonstrates what can be achieved with a relatively simple circuit and some clever programming. With only an ATMEL microcontroller and a handful of components, it functions as a wide range multifrequency inductance and Q-factor meter.
